Pilar Cortés was born 1982 in Mexico City. She later went on to study Visual Arts at the National School of Arts (ENAP), part of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
Her work has been exhibited widely throughout Mexico, Colombia, the UK and Spain including: ”La Vista” the Gallery Sector Reform, Guadalajara, Mexico and Bellas Artes, Cali, Colombia. ”Juntas y Revueltas. Mujeres en la Plastica mexicana”, Museo de la Cd. de Mexico, “Paint: Water + Stone = Liquid Thought” Showroom Gallery, Bristol and Fringe Visual Arts Festival 2011, Bath, UK. “Limitrofe. Crossing Borders” El Arbol Gallery,Valencia, Spain and a solo exhibition at Centre for Culture, Jaime Sabines. Tuxtla Gtz. Chiapas, México.
Since 2008, Pilar has lived in Bristol, UK where she works in her studio at Coexist Studios, Hamilton House. In September 2011, she was invited to participate in the performance “From Morning till night” by Katerina Seda at the Tate Modern, London.
“As a painter, I am interested in questioning what painting is and where its possibilities lie, primarily through the genre of landscape. I find I am naturally drawn to the philosophical theme of the Sublime and the qualities of the elements.”
